Day 2: Sunrise Skies & Ancient Kingdoms – Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa

    Where We Are Going:

Start your day in the heart of the Cultural Triangle before heading east to Polonnaruwa, the island’s majestic second ancient capital. In the afternoon, you’ll journey into the wild landscapes of Minneriya, Kaudulla, or Hurulu Eco Park to witness Sri Lanka’s legendary elephant herds.

    What You Will Experience:

    • A Magical Morning (Optional): Experience the ultimate "bucket list" moment with a Hot Air Balloon Ride. Float silently over the Sigiriya Rock fortress, shimmering lakes, and emerald jungles as the first light of dawn hits the horizon.

    • The Royal Ruins of Polonnaruwa: Discover a world of archaeological wonders as you explore the UNESCO-listed ancient city. Walk (or cycle) through the ruins of the Royal Palace, the sacred Quadrangle, and the Gal Vihara, where four magnificent Buddha statues are carved directly into a single granite rock.

    • The Great Elephant Gathering: Hop into a 4x4 Jeep for an exhilarating Wildlife Safari. Depending on the season and elephant movements, you’ll visit the best park to see massive herds of wild Asian elephants—often numbering in the hundreds—grazing near the ancient reservoirs.

    • Hidden Forest Monastery (Optional): If you crave a quieter moment, visit Ritigala. Tucked away in a strictly protected forest, these ancient stone pathways and meditation platforms offer a mystical glimpse into the lives of forest-dwelling monks.

Frequently Asked & Question

The tour involves two significant climbs: Sigiriya Rock (approx. 1,200 steps) and the Dambulla Cave Temple (a 15-20 minute uphill walk). While a moderate level of fitness is recommended, you can take breaks at your own pace. If the climb is too difficult, you can still enjoy the beautiful gardens and ground-level views.

The region is a year-round destination, but the best weather is usually from January to September. To see "The Gathering" of elephants in Minneriya, the best months are July to September.

Sri Lankan temples are very sacred. Both men and women must wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Please avoid sleeveless tops, shorts, or short skirts. You will also need to remove your shoes and hats before entering temple grounds (carrying a pair of socks can help if the ground is hot).

We monitor elephant movements daily. We will take you to Minneriya, Kaudulla, or Hurulu Eco Park depending on where the largest herds are located on that specific day to ensure you have the best sighting experience.

At Ontera Tours, we prioritize animal welfare. We recommend the Millennium Elephant Foundation because they focus on care and conservation, and they do not allow elephant riding. At Pinnawala, you can observe the herd’s natural behavior during their river bath.

Most sites are photographer-friendly, but there are strict rules at Sigiriya (no photos of the frescoes) and some parts of the Temple of the Tooth. Your driver will always point out the "No Photography" signs to help you follow local regulations.

There are wasp nests on the rock, and they are usually calm. We recommend staying quiet and avoiding loud noises or aggressive movements while on the stairs. On rare occasions, if the wasps are active, the site rangers may temporarily close certain paths for your safety.

Yes. You will have a dedicated, professional English-speaking driver-guide and a private vehicle for the entire 4-day journey, providing you with personalized service and flexibility.

Sri Lankan food can be spicy, but the hotels and restaurants we recommend offer a range of options, including mild curries and Western dishes. Don't forget to try the traditional Village Tour lunch for an authentic taste of local flavors!
